Restoration of the Portal of Glory
Restoration of the Portal of Glory
The project of preservation and restoration of the Portal of Glory and its environment, framed within the Santiago Cathedral Program, is a multidisciplinary project with the aim not just of preserving this masterpiece of European Romanesque, but also to convey to society its historical-artistic value, as well as the importance of preserving Heritage.
This project has been materialized thanks to the exclusive patronage of the Barrié Foundation. With an investment of over 6 million Euros, it is a reflection of its commitment to the recovery of Galicia’s historical and cultural heritage.
The restoration process comprised several stages. It began in 2006, as a result of the critical situation faced by the Portal of Glory, suffering from continuous losses of materials, while also affected by complex physical-mechanical mechanisms of materials degradation. The intervention was fostered by the Cathedral and the Barrié Foundations, with the technical collaboration of the Spanish Institute of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and the supervision of Xunta de Galicia (Autonomous Government of Galicia). This has enabled the stabilization of the whole set and the preservation of the still existing polychrome from an imminent risk of irreversible loss, thus conserving it for future generations.
This initiative by the Barrié Foundation was highlighted as an example of private patronage by the French Ministry of Culture, and has received numerous acknowledgements. Among them, the European Heritage Award / Europa Nostra Award 2019, the SERenidade Award 2018 by Cadena Ser, the Heritage Award 2013 by the Group of World Heritage Cities of Spain, the Círculo de Economía Foundation Award to Entrepreneurial Sponsorship and Patronage in 2012, and the Cultura Galega Award to Initiatives in favor of Cultural Heritage by Xunta de Galicia in 2010.
