European Heritage Award/ Europa Nostra Award 2019
The Project for the conservation and restoration of the Portal of Glory and its environment has received the European Heritage Award/ Europa Nostra Award 2019 in the Conservation Category
The jury praised this project as an “outstanding example of conservation and careful recovery of polychrome stone sculpture in a work of fundamental relevance in Romanesque Sculpture”.
According to Mr. José María Arias Mosquera, President of the Barrié Foundation, “with this project, the Barrié Foundation reinstates its historical and solid commitment with the Galician Heritage, both tangible and intangible, while developing and supporting initiatives with the aim of preserving it and adding value to it. The project is another one in a list of relevant projects, such as the archaeological and artistic cataloguing of Galicia, the restoration of Master Matthew’s stone choir, the wooden replicas of the Portal instruments, or the edition of Songbooks.”
The Europa Nostra Awards promote the best practices related to the heritage conservation, management, research, education and communication. Thus, the awards program fosters a deeper public knowledge about the cultural heritage as a strategic resource for European economy and society.
“I’m very proud to congratulate every winner of the European Heritage Awards/ Europa Nostra Awards 2019. These heritage heroes-professionals and volunteers from all over Europe-have achieved something which is truly remarkable. Their work of restoration, conservation, support or promotion of European heritage sites and monuments, as well as Europe’s intangible heritage, is of very high quality. These Awards testify to the huge impact that heritage projects have on our economy, our environment, our culture and our quality of life. European heritage is a key asset for the future of Europe and for our prosperity. This sends an important message to every European citizen and to the future leaders of the European Union institutions, to be elected in the coming European elections”, pointed out Plácido Domingo, President of Europa Nostra.
